About

This site covers methods for language learning. The topic of language learning is covered widely online, but in most resources there is a notable gap in personalizing the advice.

It’s common to see recommendations for specific methods, “secret tricks”, etc. but the reality is that language learning is a personal journey, and utilizing your own learning style, lifestyle, goals, and circumstances is critical in learning efficiently, and in not hitting a wall and giving up.

The information here is of course biased to my own perspective and my own experiences, I will do my very best to be neutral and to clearly flag areas where my advice is contingent on each person’s preferences, but there will be places where I am unintentionally biased. My advice is only a starting point, make this your own journey.

My “resume”: I am a native English speaker who learned Mandarin Chinese from scratch living in China, and learned Japanese remotely using online resources. I have experience learning a language from 0 using immersion, I’ve experienced classroom learning, and I’ve experienced self-learning using online resources and tutors. My target is/was comfortable conversation level, effortlessly talking about a wide range of topics, I don’t claim to be native level in either of these, I also tend to focus more on speaking and listening than on reading and writing.

Learning style this content is focused on: People who learn by exposure, and hands on experience. If you are someone who learns most effectively in a classroom setting, this site might not be right for you. However if you have only ever learned in a classroom and are not completely sure your best learning method, I’d encourage you to read the resources and be open minded.
